In the reading for today it says there were 4 kinds of metal plates. Does that mean types of metal, like gold, brass, steel, etc. We know from yesterday readings the plates were described as plates of gold. Tonights readings talk about the Plates of Brass. Lets hear from the history seekers out there.

Reading today I felt sadden for Lehi. I am sure there were many friends and maybe even relatives that would not listen to his warnings. Yet he stayed true to his faith and did not deny his visions. May we have a small portion of his strength.

My thoughts today are of the sadness that Lehi must have felt as he tried to warn the people of his city. You know he must have had many friends who didn't listen to him. That must have been tough. But he stayed true to his faith and did not deny his visions, and he and his family were blessed for his strength.

Okay, I appreciate getting on here and just reading Harold's thoughts and commments, But, I am going to start a calling tree of sorts to get additional comments posted! It is amazing how you much reading can get done while consumming a bowl of cereal, right Chris?

An unexpected snow day is the perfect opportunity to read! I hope the Primary children will soon be reading about Lehi's dream. This is another part of the scriptures that can help us to understand Heavenly Father's plan for us.

I like the way how Heavenly Father "provides the way" to get the plates from Laban. He knew that the plates had to go with Lehi to the New World. He gave Laban all the opportunities to comply. Laban had to be convinced by his own sword...is it tough love or Heavenly Fathers way to say that HIS will will be done and none shall stand in his way to bring about his plan

After reading a few nights with the kids, I realize that they know more than I thought about the scriptures and what certain words or phrases mean. It's good to know that they are remembering the things that they read and are taught at church and family home evening. Ed asked Eden what "crying unto the Lord" meant. And she said, "Prayer"... like she didn't have to give it a second thought! It's good to take time out of our overscheduled days and have that quiet time to really learn about the prophets and what the their lives must have been like so long ago. The kids are really enjoying it as well.

I have always been touched by the testimonies of the witnesses to the Book of Mormon. A few days ago, Meridian magazine published an article concerning the testimonies of the 3 witnesses and it dealt with the concept that none of them ever denied their testimony even after excommunication. In Martin Harris' later years, he bore fervent testimony of the truthfullness of the Book of Mormon. Even though Oliver Cowdery and David Whitmer had been excommunicated, they never abandoned their testimony and were quite vehement when questioned about it or challenged by others. If you are interested, you can read this article here: http://www.ldsmag.com/bookofmormon/ 080116witness.html (Note: Remove the space from the url when you paste it into your browser...)
I hope that my testimony can be that strong and continue to grow.

A challenge would not be a challenge if it were not difficult. Getting into the habbit of reading with the kids is not easy. We did not start reading until wenesday, and so we have been playing catch-up. But regardless of how long it takes us or how many questions we ask, the kids ( especially Sydney) are eagerly waiting to have big words explained or to answer a question. I am grateful for the outline provided for us. I know that as we continue to read, it will become a part of our daily lives and the scriptures a part of our hearts and we will know of the importance and truth in them.
Thank you!

Give it a little more time and your children will be reminding you to read, Krista. We started reading at the beginning of January and one of our gentlemen always reminds me if we haven't read before bedtime. Sometimes I end up reading the same chapter twice to be sure everyone had a chance to participate, but even that is a blessing because you pick up new things the second time through.

Just when I think I'm strong I have my kids pulling me out of bed to read oh so early in the morning. I AM grateful for this, really. My father (non-member) provided a great example of reading the Bible every day. He would be in his dirty work attire and look awful going to a job he hated every day. But there was a peace I saw in him and I hope to show our children this also. Great experiences this week.

I always seem to reflect on Nephi's example and what I can do in my own life to be as faithful. However, in my reading this week I reflected on Laman and Lemuels example. For the first time in a long time I thought about what I can learn from Laman and Lemuel. They saw an angel that confirmed what Lehi and Nephi knew to be true. But no sooner did the angel leave did they begin to question the Lords commandment. I think this is a great lesson in that how often do I know something is true but I sit and murmur. Maybe not to the extent of Laman and Lemuel but often times about the little things. Just some food for thought. Thanks for all your great comments this week. Keep it up!

I was impressed by the method Nephi used to "persuade" his brothers to go back to get the plates. It is a "template" or "formula" for us to follow in our families in raising our children as is mentioned in D&C 121:41-46, where it says, "only by persausion, by long suffering, etc." It is great to read and reread the Book of Mormon. I was able to share this idea in our "Strengthening the Family" couse this week. This sacred book is truly vital for our day. Chris O.
